From what material is Swarovski jewellery manufactured? Swarovski stones sparkle like diamonds but what are they made of? The lovely jeweller stones are made from specially cut glass. In the first manufacturing step, quartz sand is heated up and processed into a viscous mass. Crystal glass is created as soon as this has hardened. Then a refined cutting takes place – this process is top secret, however! Only selected employees of the Austrian company know exactly how the glittering-sparkling crystals are created. More than 600 researchers and developers continually work with self-developed machines to improve the purity of the jewellery stones and the precision of the cut. Over the company’s history there have been Swarovski jewellery stones in more than 100,000 different colours, shapes and facets – even the smallest crystal stone in the world, at 0.8 millimetres in diameter, has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. Swarovski: a family company with history The Austrian company was established in 1895 by glass polisher Daniel Swarovski in Wattens, Tyrol. Swarovski himself came from Georgenthal, then in Northern Bohemia. In the 19th century, cutting glass was still exclusively carried out by hand, by peasants to supplement their income. In order to manufacture larger quantities, Daniel Swarovski developed the first mechanical cutting machine in 1892, that he registered as a patent – this started the success story of the enchanting fashion jewellery.
